Turtle sanctuaries

Playa Azul - Michoacan Beaches

The coast of Michoacán is a huge turtle sanctuary covering 214 kilometers. Every year three species of turtle come in thousands to lay their eggs on Michoacán’s beaches. the Pacific Loggerhead, pondslider and leatherback turtle, one of the largest in the world. This natural phenomenon is protected and, in many cases, indigenous communities run the sanctuaries and ensure that turtles complete their annual cycle, thus saving them from extinction. The turtles come to lay their eggs, and their nests are carefully moved to protect them from predators until the eggs hatch, when up to 1.5 million bay turtles are released into the sea. Visitors are welcome to participate in this exciting event, especially children, who are taught about conservation.

Three turtle species come to Lázaro Cárdenas. In October, the city celebrates the Sea Turtle Festival, with many activities for children and adults such as releasing baby turtles, painting contests, crafts, etc. The same three species arrive at Azul Beach, Maruata and Colola.

The best place to see the leatherback is Mexiquillo between November and December. Between July and November, thousands of Pacific Loggerhead turtles nest in Ixtapilla, as well as Playa Azul and Las Peñas. The black turtle nests between August and January in Playa Azul and Pichilinguillo, as well as the beaches of Maruata, Colola and Bucerías Lighthouse.
