Janitzio Island

Janitzio (Isla Janitzio)

Janitzio is the most important island of Lake Pátzcuaro and the one located at a greater height. Its name means "maize flower" in Purépecha. The island is renowned for its traditional celebration of the “Day of the Death” on November 1st. The view of the lake is spectacular and visitors can ride a 1200 meters long zip-line.

The island of Janitzio is famous not only fot its natural beauty, but also because it was the scenery of the mexican film "Maclovia", tape of 1948, which starred Maria Felix and Pedro Armendariz.
