Jose Maria Teclo Morelos Perez y Pavon was born in here on September 30, 1975. He was known as a hero of the Independence of Mexico and as the favorite son of the old Valladolid, now the city of Morelia.

The building dates from the seventeenth century, it was originally built in baroque style with smooth white walls. However, in 1888 it was rebuilt, acquiring its current neoclassical style. It is a one level building with two interior gardens. In 1930 it was declared a national monument and in 1965 it became a museum dedicated to the leader of the Independence movement, Jose María Morelos.
