Pico de Tancítaro National Park

Uruapan

This was declared a National Park during the government of Lázaro Cárdenas del Río in in 1940. Here stands the volcano Pico de Tancítaro, which gives its name to the park. It is the highest peak of the state with a height of 3845 meters on the sea level.

On August 19th, 2009, a decree was approved to recategorize the park so that it became a protected area for both its flora and fauna and thus preserve them from urban development. It comprises the municipalities of Tancítaro, Uruapan, Nuevo Parangaricutiro and Peribán de Ramos.
