The Santa Maria Magdalena Temple in Cuitzeo was the fifth temple founded by the Augustinian order in the ancient province of Michoacan. Today it is one of the best preserved testimonies of religious architecture from the early years of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. Since several missions where carried out throughout the town, the building belongs to a series of old convents known as Misiones Conventuales de Michoacan. The Augustinians named this particular building in honor of Saint Mary Magdalene. The architectural compound is comprised by the Santa Maria Magdalena Temple and Former Convent and the Museo de la Estampa (Graphic Arts Museum).
