This archaeological site is known as “Tres Cerritos” which means “three small hills” because of the appearance of the three main architectural structures of the place.

A total of 175 petroglyphs along with the remains of 23 people were found in this pre-Hispanic settlement. The site’s origins remain unknown, although it has been possible to establish that it was witness to at least two historically important periods: The first one revealing a constant local development in the Cuitzeo area, which can be observed in the ceramics and in the architectural elements which are very similar to those found in Teotihuacán; The second period dates back to the arrival of Tarascan groups who used the site to bury their dead within the site’s collapsed structures.

Despite being relatively small, this architectural site has great historical value because the excavations carried out here have provided plenty of information regarding the regional historical stages. The research in the Tres Cerritos Archaeological Site began in 1984.
