Coastal Region

Michoacán has more than 200 km of coastline in the Pacific Ocean, composing a region of virgin beaches, high cliffs, incredible estuaries and indigenous fishing communities. It is the ideal place to feel one with nature.

Lázaro Cárdenas is the most important city in the coastal region and one of the main loading ports in the Mexican Pacific. Despite its industrial atmosphere, the city is also gateway to some of the best beaches on the Michoacan coast, such as the nearby Playa Azul or Caleta de Campos.

Michoacan beaches are also the place where year after year thousands of turtles arrive in order to mate and spawn. Thanks to an intense awareness project, the indigenous communities themselves protect the sanctuaries and turtle camps such as Colola and Ixtapilla, where visitors can participate in several environmental activities, such as releasing the turtles back to the ocean. Local artisans elaborate their handicrafts with sea shells and vegetable fibers.

Beaches such as La Ticla o Nexpa are the most guarded secret of surfers from all around the world. In Michoacán, there’s a beach for every taste.

Trying some fish and seafood is a most when visiting the coastal region, as well the local coconut which is used in both desserts and sauces.

The region encompasses the following municipalities: Lázaro Cárdenas, Coahuayana and Aquila.
