MORELIA

World Heritage City. History and art in every corner.

Founded in 1541 as Valladolid, the history of Morelia runs parallel to the history of Mexico. Its extraordinary historic center, declared a World Heritage Site, was built in the s. XVII with the characteristic pink quarry of the region. From the imposing Cathedral, the city displays a profusion of palaces such as the Government Palace; former convents such as San Francisco, where the Artisan Institute is located, or the first conservatory in America, the Conservatorio de las Rosas, home to the city’s choir of children’s singers.

In addition, the city was an important center of knowledge and the cradle of the independence movement. Key figures such as Agustín de Iturbide and José María Morelos y Pavón studied at the Colegio de San Nicolás, heir to the old university founded by Don Vasco de Quiroga, when Miguel Hidalgo was rector. Morelos himself offers an excellent history lesson for your children in the Casa Natal that they will enjoy, as well as the video mapping show in the Plaza de Valladolid.

The center of Morelia is perfect to be explored with the curiosity of the walker. Morelians and visitors meet in the cafes and restaurants of the portals. Foodies can explore the extraordinary cuisine of Michoacan in exclusive restaurants. Within a few blocks you can admire exquisite art collections, go shopping or attend a concert. Cosmopolitan atmosphere in the colonial heart of the city.
